An amazing race in some equally amazing weather conditions: hail, sleet, snow flurrys, high winds, and incredible blasts of sunshine
taunted the riders as they tackled the superb Djouce trails.
Off-camber skills were tested to the max as new sections provided excellent variety and challenge.

News date: 4-April-2008 Big thanks from Banbridge Cycling Club!
Banbridge Cycling Club is extremely grateful for all the kind words spoken about the Moneyscalp course, used for K-Capital round 2.
For six weeks a small team worked every weekend to construct the course only for part of the course to be removed five days before the race due to damage done by torrential rain.
Due to loosing part of the course we had to quickly add on the grass sections near the bottom of the course.
Thankfully the raceday went well, sorry about the cold wind.
For me it was great to see the Paramedic being able to sit in his vehicle and complete the Times crossword.
Since the race we have received many messages of support concerning the course, communications from all ages and abilities.
I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all who supported the race and especially to those who took time to give us their views on the course.
The plan now is to repair the section that you did not get to race on, it had 27 bridges!
Hopefully the new course can be used for an NPS event in August.
Thankyou all,
Andy Potts on behalf of Banbridge CC
March-2008
News date: 31-March-2008 K-Capital Cup Round 3 is just around the corner!
There's no let-up in the race action as Ireland's finest XC racers (as well as a healthy international contingent)
descend upon Djouce woods this weekend, home of Benchcut, Ecstasy, GC and many more top-class trails!
The last time this venue was used for an MTB event was back in a sunny November 2007 when over 80 MTB'ers assembled in the lower
Djouce car park for the Djouce Challenge
which was an excellent event, enjoyed by everyone that took part.
This weekends race promises the same top-quality singletrack that riders previously enjoyed so much, and of course, excellent post-race wind-down
refreshments while riders 'wow' each other with their tales of their days racing...

A huge attendance and an excellent days racing enjoyed by all,

"That was a deadly race. Really enjoyed it. Was going really well the whole way round"

"Deadly buzz, can't wait for the next one. Racing in the has been category is the place to be"

"There's some absolutely lovely singletrack on the course. A good mix of pain, climbing, and reward, technical."
"Thanks for a very well organised weekend on a fantastic course, loved the new course, bits of everything in it, garlic fields, paintball fields, straw fields, strewn bodies, bottles, gels, muck savages, plain ould muck and class racing. Pure carnage coming through the experts on the rock on lap 1, hilarious stuff"

"The K Capital Cup is the best thing to happen to XC racing in Ireland. "
"You can never hear this enough - huge thank you to all who contributed to this event but particularly to TW and the Seymour family. I've been racing for several years now and its the same selfless people putting in enormous efforts for the benefit of the Irish MTB community. It was a fantastic day, course, riders and spectators alike."
"Another brilliant day out, Team WORC did themselves and the image of MTB in Ireland proud with the race on Sunday. The course was amazing, its such a brilliant venue and a treat to get to ride it even if its only once a year"

News date: Mar-06-2008 K-Capital Cup Round 1 preview
On Sunday 9th March the 2008 K-Capital Cup International MTB XCO Series will blast into action at Bray in County Wicklow, the curtain raiser promoted by Team Worc. At this stage the entry for the Elite Mens race looks like the best ever assembled at an Irish event.
The superb setting of Kilruddery Estate is the venue for the first of the four rounds.
As in 2007, two rounds will be held in the North and two in the South.
The K-Capital Series was one of the highlights of the 2007 Irish MTB season with entries coming from Britain, Europe and South Africa.
The various race organisers have already received interest for the 2008 series from both Britain and Europe.
Sponorship for 2008 once again comes from Mark Kenny and his K-Capital Source company with the promoting Clubs also benefiting from grant funding from Cycling Ireland/Irish Sports Council.
Mark Kenny’s K-Capital Club will host the third race in the series. Sunday’s course is described as 8km long and varies from climbs to forest roads, technical single tracks and rides through wooded areas.
Extra spice will be added to the first three rounds as they will also act as Olympic qualification races for the Irish MTB XCO representative for the Beijing Olympics in August. Following the set criteria, the race off for the Olympic place is between the three top UCI ranked Irish riders as published at the end of 2007.
The three riders who qualified for the race off were Robin Seymour 49th (386 points) , Niall Davis 86th (253 points)and Conor McConvey 126th (177 points). The Irish riders will be awarded UCI ranking points for their finishing positions in each of the three races, the top scorer gets the place for Beijing.
At the time of writing the news concerning Conor McConvey is distressing. The young Belfast rider suffered a broken shoulder after being knocked off his bike by a car while cycling on the Shore Road in Belfast. Conor, 21st in the U-23 World Championships at Fort William, will be out of action for six weeks thus wrecking his early season plans, this after he has spent much of the winter at warm weather and altitude training.
Everyone involved in Irish MTB wishes Conor a very speedy recovery.
Joining Niall Davis and Robin Seymour in the Elite line up at Kilruderry will be the BCF Olympic squad of Oliver Beckingsale (Giant RC), Ian Bibby GB National Team, David Fletcher GB National Team, and Ross Creber GB National Team. Beckingsale is one of the best known British riders and is current British Champion. Other confirmed British entries are Adrain Lansley (Pedalon) and Gareth Montgomery (Singletrack/Pipedream).
European entries come from German Pro rider Jochen Coconcelli (Zwillingscraft) and Polish rider Rafal Plucinski. Other Irish riders to look out for include Richard Felle and Yvain Sugno, Phillip Roche all Team Worc, Lewis Ferguson (Northern/Dave Kane) and Roger Aiken (Banbridge CC), Aiken the reigning Irish Cyclo Cross Champion. There have also been rumours that Commonwealth Games Champion Liam Killeen will make the trip to Bray; if this happened it would be the ‘cream on the cake’.
There is a full programme of support races, the Elite Ladies event starting just after the Elite Men. This year the Elite Ladies race is not a UCI class and therefore does not carry UCI points. The Expert Class will feature a wealth of Irish talent including Dave Barry(IMBRC), Connor Campbell(Newry Wheelers), Oisin Boydell (UCD), Dave O’Neill (Swords CC), Luke Manning (IMBRC), Alfie Wallace (Epic) and Evan Ryan (Team Worc).
The Junior riders are led by Irish Junior MTB and Cyclo Cross Champion Liam McGreevy (Banbridge CC) with his main threat coming from Paul O’Reilly (IMBRC), Chris Cameron (XMTB), Conal Higgins (Sorrento) and Johnny Beers (East Antrim). Making her debut in the Junior Class will be North Downs Jes Laird.
The Masters Class in 2007 was a superb battle between Joe McCall (K-Capital/Rocky Mountain) and Peter O’Farrell (U/A), however for 2008 Joe McCall will ride as an Elite. The supporting cast will include Team Worc’s Gordon Lucas, Stuart Galloway and Dave Gill plus Niall Quinlan (Cycleways), Andrew Wallace (Dave Kane/Northern), James McCluskey and the event ‘dark horse’, Epic’s Damien Mulchrone.
The Vets class is one of the best supported categories of Irish MTB, with the ‘old men’ always putting on a good show. Apollo CT’s Aiden McDonald won the 2007 Vets K-Cap title and will be a strong contender this year. His main rivals should be XMTB’s Robbie Lamont, the infamous McCabe brothers Johnny and Gerry (Cuchulainn), Paul Coyne (Team Worc), Paul McMenamin (Leisure Lakes), William Mulligan (Banbridge CC), Gary Wilson (East Antrim) Andy Burns (Orchard Juiced) and the Epic duo of Justin May and Richie Byrne.
The Sports event, for fun riders, always attracts a huge entry and some of the best racing of the day.
*****Riders are reminded that if they wish to ride in the Masters World Championships in France in August they can not ride in an Elite event.****
Ireland’s future talent will be on show in the Youth race program, with races from Under 8 up to Under 16 level. At all four rounds the U-8 to U-12 riders will have their own courses with the U-14 and U-16 riders racing on the main course.
Supporting the Youth races will be riders from the following Clubs, Sorrento, Epic, Team Worc, XMTB, Banbridge CC and Orchard Juiced.

News date: 18-Oct-2007 MTB News by Andy Potts Irish riders at two European venues:
Last weekend Irish MTB riders took part in two events on the continent of Europe. The Irish International Team brought their 2007 season and Olympic qualification programme to a close in Turkey. In France a number of our well known riders took part in the traditional end of season finale, the Roc d’Azur.
The Irish International Squad traveled to Turkey for the 11th Alanya MTB Cup, a UCI Class 1 ranked event, the team comprising of Robin Seymour, Connor McConvey and new boy, Richard Felle. Held on Sunday in atrocious weather conditions, the race brought together five national champions, with victory going to British Champion Oli Beckinsale, the Giant rider breaking clear of his fellow national champs in the closing stages of the race.
Ukrainian champion Igor Bogdan was runner up with fellow countryman Sergiy Rysenko in third. Irish champion Robin Seymour finished in 4th, collecting a very useful 25 world ranking points. Turkish champ Bilal Agal was fifth as Hungarian champion, Andras Parti completed the top six. After making a rocket like start, Connor McConvey eventually finished in 12th, thus bringing to an end a most memorable first season in the senior ranks, the high point being his 21st in the U-23 World Championships. Niall Davis pulled out of the trip due to work commitments, his place being taken by Team Worc’s Richard Felle. With Niall moving into the main Elite ranks next season, Richard will compete at U-23 level along with Connor. The Turkish trip was an ideal introduction to the international scene for the quiet spoken Dubliner. Richard was rewarded by finishing in 15th and in doing so won his first ever world ranking point.
This was the last race on the Irish Team’s Olympic qualification schedule, the end of a hectic two year battle for world ranking points. For the London Olympics riders face the ridiculous situation of having to spend four years to qualify.
Announcement of run-off competition for Olympic MTB XCO place
With Ireland having almost secured an Olympic place for the XCO event in Beijing in 2008, the following details the three races which will be used to select the rider who will represent Ireland at the Olympics. Under the criteria set down in 2006, Irish riders ranked in the top 300 in the World Rankings over both of the years 2006 / 2007 will take part in a series of three races, the overall winner being the selected Olympic rider. At present three riders meet the criteria Robin Seymour, Niall Davis and Connor McConvey. The three races chosen will be rounds One, Two and Three of the 2008 K-Capital Cup series which will take place during the months of March and April 2007. It was decided not to use an outside / European venue as this would have given an unfair advantage to the current highest ranked rider, as they would have started the race from further up the grid. The race for Olympic selection should add extra spice to the 2008 K-Capital series.
Irish riders in France: A number of Irish riders took part in the traditional end of season festival on the French Riviera, the Roc d’Azur.
A total of 4378 riders entered the various events which included BMX racing and various forms of the main event, the Roc d’Azur itself, held over a 55km course.
Irish Masters Champion Joe McCall finished 27th in the MA1 (Masters 30-39) Class of the ‘Roc’.
Other Irish finishers in this class were, James McCluskey 36th, Dave Gill 40th, Niall Quinlan 60th,
Paddy Daly was 70th, Stuart Galloway 147th,
Paul Coyne was 347th, Patrick Mackey was 320th, Rory Walsh was 358th.
Evan Ryan got taken down in a crash at the start of the Roc and bent his wheel which put him out.
In the Junior event Belfast rider Neil McGimpsey produced a great ride to finish 68th, a boost for the young rider at the end of an injury plagued season.
The MA2 category, what we would call Vets, gave Peter Buggle a superb 6th place, while Ian Sutton finished in 88th and the grand old man of IMBRC, Les Walpole was 193rd.

Already on a high following the release of the world rankings last week, the points scored by the squad will greatly strengthen Irelands Olympic MTB hopes.
Ireland sensationally dominated the Elite Mens race with Robin Seymour winning and Niall Davis taking second. Conor McConvey finished fourth, the ranking points earned will place him inside the top 100, giving Ireland three riders in the top 100 world ranked MTB XCO riders. Although not part of the official Irish team, Peter Buggle, the ageless wonder, finished in eighth place.
In the Elite Womens race Tarja Owens overcame all her recent health problems to take second place with Ciara McManus a brilliant fourth. The points earned by the two Irish ladies will hopefully bring them towards their target of a top 18 place in the overall team rankings.

News date: 24-April-2007 EPIC evening league preview EPIC MTB are resuming their highly successful evening race league
at their renovated and extended club course at Leadmines.
A huge amount of work has been out into repairing the course after the ravages of winter, with the result that there is a brand new section
that boasts an uphill rock garden, fast flowing initial section and tight technical second section.
This league is open to non-EPIC club members also, with MADMTB expected to make a strong showing.
There is a handicap system in place for this entire league where the faster riders start last with the less experienced riders starting first.
This league and course are excellent training for NPS race season, so you are encouraged to come down and give it a go.
The league will run every Thursday night, starting from the Leadmines tower at 7:30pm.
The general meeting point is Palmers Golden Ball pub,
at 7:00pm, it is not recommended to drive-up to the Leadmines, as there is is not any parking space, the cycle-up should only take about 15 minutes and is a good warm-up for the race.

News date: 20-Mar-2007 K Capital Round 2 preview / Round 1 report The next exciting installment in the K-Capital Cup International MTB Cross Country Series takes place on Sunday 25th of March in the beautiful setting of Rostevor Forest.
Banbridge CC will be promoting the event . For the past few weeks members of Banbridge CC have worked hard to prepare the course and make it worthy of an international event.
There's quite a bit of hill climbing in this one, with the climb at the start and middle third making up 50% of the overall course
but riders are to be rewarded with some savage technical decents sure to put a smile on many faces.
Round one in Wicklow saw Irish number one Robin Seymour take the glory in the Elite race, though he was pushed all the way by English rider Adrian Lansley.
On Sunday at Rostrevor Seymour could have another battle on his hands with confirmed entries from leading South African rider John Paul Pearton, German Winter Triathlon ace Benjamin Sonntag, and top English rider Phil Spencer.
Looking for good finished will be Irish riders Nial Davis, Lewis Ferguson, Peter Buggle and James McCluskey.
The Womens Elite race should see a dual between Beth McCluskey and Tarja Owens.
