Online Registration is now open for the 2010 Ulster XC National Champs being held in Tollymore forest Park, Co. Down on Sunday the 12th Sept 2010.

Course Description:
Tollymore was the venue for the 2007 Champs and anyone who was there will remember the Big Dipper which was very popular with both riders and spectators.
For 2010 we have built a completely new course which includes only the Big Dipper from previous event.
The course starts and finishes in the large grass event field which is often used for scout camps etc. This field is also the carpark and camping will be available at a small charge to Forest Service. The toilets & showers are only a 5 minute walk away.

The course comprises two loops either side of the river with two way traffic over the Ivy Bridge. On each side there is a fire road climb but not long or steep. Most of this course is in the forest.

There is a wide mix of fast flowing tracks, technical single track climb, several drops with tricky turns and exits, river and stream splashes followed by steep climbs, a very tricky section over an old stone well followed by a drop into the river and rocky climb on the other side and not forgetting the Big Dipper. A lot of man hours have been spent creating this new course which we are very happy with.

Tollymore is a fantastic place and now with the large event field for race and carpark this would make an excellent potential venue for future National Championships.

Race Information

After the success of the XC Championships in 2008 and K-Capital Challenge Race Series final stage in 2009, Kippure Estate has entered into talks with Coillte, Wicklow County Tourism and Wicklow Rural Partnership to develop permanent mountain bike trails in the Athdown woods opposite the entrance to the estate. When you arrive at the village, pass the Four Seasons hotel on your left, and take the right immediately after this down to the Sailing Club which is down the end of this road on your left.
From the North Make your way to Newry, following the signs for Dublin following the A2. When you get the centre of Newry, follow the signs for Omeath / Carlingford R173, you will take a left along the quay in front of the Quays shopping centre. Follow this road down, taking a left at the end, this brings you onto the R173, it’s a straight road from here to Carlingford When you arrive at the village, pass the Castle on your left, and take the left immediately before the Four Seasons Hotel, after this drive down to the Sailing Club which is down the end of this road on your left. 3.

We are using a single lap once again this year, the full course about 7k of single track added and is approx. 52km long at this stage and should be pretty fast flowing. They will be a shorter option (17k) for those riders that just want to take part but feel the 52k loop a wee bit too long. The race itself peddles off at 10am with all riders starting in a mass start. Once around the Church in Carlingford there will be no bottle necks as it is a long forest fire track to start with.
Along the way you’ll peddle on/up/over/down/through/across and along The Táin Trail, The Devil’s Elbow, Black Run, Roller Coaster, Quad Tracks, Ray’s Loop, The Castles, Aidans Canyon, Skull Alley, CLEC Route, Goylin Pass, Black Ski Run, Carlingford……………..Home Sweet Home !!!!

I have been mountain biking since 2006 and a member of MAD since 2007 and last year I got bitten by the cyclo cross bug. I have competed in a number of MTB stage races as well a 12 hour races with the aim to race 24 hour solo next year and have a good season racing cyclo cross. I am currently involved in setting up a web site http://www.irishcx.com to help promote cyclo cross to people in Ireland and provide a central repository of information. I am aiming to work with the commission try and help promote Irish cyclo cross as well as mountain biking in general.

Ollie has been known to cycle bikes with no gears, and no suspension, and 29″ wheels, I believe he currently owns a bike that incorporates ALL THREE of these MTB mortal-sins! Still, his enthusiasm for all things 2-wheeled is undeniable, and I reckon he’ll be a great asset to the commission and the world of cyclocross.
Please support Ollie in his new role on the commission as he gets to grips with managing the cyclocross aspect of the sport.

You can see info about the current commission members here.
